The funding will be used to deliver a new programme of social physical and empowerment activities to 330 young people (11-18 years old) within the Partington Broomwood and Old Trafford communities of Trafford. The organisations sims aims to use the core values of Rugby Union to make a positive impact on communities across Greater Manchester and the Northwest. They run education mental health and social inclusion programmes for adults and young people using sport as the “hook” for participation. Brighter Futures aims to engage educate and inspire YP (11-18 years old) growing up in Partington Broomwood and Old Trafford to achieve their aspirations. In consultation with the community SSF have looked to create interventions that support the development of skills confidence and knowledge proving support to overcome barriers early and access personalised provision.

Advantage is a post 16 training provider, delivering in Trafford at Sale West Community Centre. The programme specialises in providing training programmes for young people who have recently left school, who may not have gained any qualifications and are unsure about their next step. Combining tuition for Level 2 Employability qualification and Functional Skills in English and Maths with work placement, active enrichment and life skills, the Advantage Programme, now in its 5th year, worked with over 80 learners at 6 sites in 2019/20 with more than 85% achieving their Level 2 employability qualification and 75% achieving a positive progression. We specialise in working with care leavers, young people with anxiety and mental health difficulties and young people who have been involved with the youth justice service.

Sharks Community Trust is the charitable arm of Sale Sharks and our mission is to use sport as a catalyst to improve the lives of all those living in the North West. ‘Head Start’ will be delivered in the Sale Moor and Sale West areas of Greater Manchester, the project has two main elements, engage and educate. Engage focuses on physical activity and educate focuses on mental well-being. The project is aimed at increasing confidence, self-esteem, and resilience. The grant will be used to fund specialist staff delivery and resource costs. There is a need for this project as almost 25% of Trafford’s population are inactive (complete less than 30 minutes of physical activity each week) along with 12 out of the 15 areas of the country with the highest levels of depression, found in the North West. This project tackles both these social issues within these communities in an innovative way, which has been developed with community input. The project will work closely with our existing partnerships with GP practices, housing trust organisations and Trafford Council to successfully sign post residents to the project, this will also be strengthened by a marketing strategy to support recruitment.

Sharks Community Trust is seeking funding to try to replace some of the income that has been lost during this period to try to maintain our key mental health programmes which are much needed during these times. The Trust estimates that it has lost approximately £220,000 during the past three months since all our activities ceased in mid March. It also expects to lose a similar amount over the next three months as activities will be slow to resume due to continuing social distancing measures. This ongoing loss means that we cannot afford staff costs to maintain mental health programmes.

Sharks Community Trust use rugby as the vehicle to make an impact and change the lives of the local community across the North West. Set the Pace project aims to deliver a reduction in social isolation, increased presence in their local community along with improvements in their physical and social activity, achieved through Walking Rugby. The grant funding will be used for delivery and management costs along with equipment to stay with the project to ensure its sustainability beyond our delivery. The most significant difference the project will make is improving the lives of those aged 50 years and older, to get not only physically active but socially active which in turn will enable them to feel a greater sense of involvement in their community whilst also presenting volunteering opportunities within the designated community hub the project will be delivered from.

Sharks Team Talk will use rugby as a basis for tackling loneliness, social isolation and dementia amongst people aged 60 plus. The project will run weekly walking rugby and social activities in four different rugby clubs across Greater Manchester (Trafford, Rochdale, Manchester and Eccles) supporting older people to engage in physical, social and volunteering activities. Participants will also be invited to group social activities, such as attending Sharks games. The grant will pay for staff to support the project and venue costs. The project will support participants to improve their health and wellbeing and use local rugby clubs to develop long-term social and physical networks.
