Towards the cost of supporting Ahmed Aden's living costs while he pursues a one-year Foundation Course in Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Bristol. Ahmed was put forward as a candidate for a bursary in conversation with Beth Wilson and Ruth Soandro-Jones. He is 20 years old and from the Horn of Africa (he came to Bristol as a teenager and came to BRR through 1625ip). He has received funding for his tuition costs but had urgent need for living costs of approx £410.14 per month = 4921.68 for a year Agreed with Bina to fund Ahmed for a full year, so he can focus on his education. Agreed to add an admin fee of £100 for BRR to hold the grant (they intend to pay him termly) and for us to have an evaluation at the end (they have asked if he can submit a report each term). All email details are attached to Ruth's account. Agreed to pay in 3 installments: Term 1 – 1640.56 + 100 for BRR Term 2 – 1640.56 Term 3 – 1640.56 Total = 5021.68

After training, participants are able to articulate in English the challenges and injustices they have faced, in order to educate and influence policy makers and practitioners. This grant supports one day per week of a project coordinator’s time to enable the VOICE course to continue for a further year, enabling them to take advantage of opportunities to influence the agenda in Bristol so that refugees and asylum seekers are welcomed and provided with opportunities to integrate in the city.

We run a Welcome Centre for asylum seekers and new refugees in the centre of Bristol 3 days each week over 48 weeks of the year. The Centre has developed over the course of 10 years with regular input from members (asylum seekers and refugees) who are encouraged to be involved in the running of the organisation from the time they join. The organisation offers free English classes, computer classes, trips, advocacy and information, support with asylum applications, opportunities to take part in public speaking, to train to be an interpreter; families can use the Early Years project for children under 5, and more. At the heart of the Centre there is a space for members to meet each other, develop friendships, and obtain emotional and wellbeing support. They can access: a cooked meal, refreshments, games, arts and crafts, destitution bags, a free haircut, massages, community interpreters, be referred to the Bristol Bike Project, see the asylum nurse, meet with a mental health volunteer from MIND and more. Additionally the organisation works in partnership with other groups in the city to host an event on Human Rights Day each year and activities and celebrations within National Refugee Week. Last year at least 850 asylum seekers and new refugees benefited from our Welcome Centre.
