The project will address 3 of 6 PHE Innovation Fund priorities. Positive East will tackle HIV stigma, late diagnosis (through increased HIV testing), information about PrEP and lack of general HIV knowledge (e.g. U=U) by highlighting the experiences of black Africans who have been in mixed status relationships through the development of spoken word pieces. Positive East have found that these themes are often most prevalent in relation to mixed status relationships, hence the focus on this particular demographic.Positive East will hold 8 workshops for 20 participants to develop 20 personal spoken word pieces between January and May that will explore and tackle the above themes. The spoken word pieces will be launched and performed at the annual HIV & Faith Symposium in May 2019.A selection of 5 pieces will be performed by actors at 6 black African festivals, e.g. Yoruba Festival, throughout the summer with accompanying outreach volunteers. To extend reach, Positive East will film the 5 selected pieces (and subtitle in multiple languages) to appear on the monitors of GP practices, other community settings, and will be used as a film installation in a marquee at the festivals. The 5 videos and accompanying audio will then feature in an online and radio campaign to mobilise the community for testing week 2019. The project will conclude with a final public event in December 2019.The project is innovative as Positive East will bring key messages directly to the heart of the black African community by using a novel multimedia approach to combine oral tradition, storytelling and spoken word to tackle HIV stigma and increase HIV knowledge and testing. It will provide Positive East and the HIV sector with a new resource that will have a lasting impact. Its merit also lies within its scalability as all outputs can be shared widely, and in multiple settings, e.g. GP surgeries and its ability to reach new audiences through online sharing with little cost. The feasibility of the project is guaranteed through Positive Easts own experience and through the expertise of the projects partners.

Rates of late and undiagnosed HIV infection are high, and some people don’t get tested due to misinformation of what happens at a test. This proposal is to develop a point of view (POV) HIV test video, an instant messaging service providing information around HIV, and a 3-part POV miniseries (to be translated into community languages) around HIV prevention and support. Working in London, but with a strong presence online, Positive East will have national reach with emphasis on targeting at-risk, and emerging at-risk communities. This project will address misinformation and stigma around HIV and increase earlier HIV testing, leading to an improved quality of life for those affected by HIV.

Alongside the stigma of living with HIV, women who are HIV positive are often isolated and often have multiple and complex needs. Many are from marginalised communities and find it difficult to get support. Positive East in London works with HIV positive women, many who are refugee and asylum seekers, who have experienced rape, sexual violence and abuse. With this grant they will be able to expand this support to help women who are experiencing domestic violence. It will build partnerships with local specialist support agencies and provide support to women to help them move away from abusive and violent situations and lead a safer life.
