Street Connect prevents deaths from drug addiction, alcoholism and homelessness among people on the streets in Glasgow. They provide street outreach, drop-in cafes, one-to-one support, rehabilitation referrals, community recovery programmes and aftercare support. 60% of the organisation's staff have lived-experience of the issues Street Connect addresses. Street Connect is using funding from The Fore to overhaul the organisation's IT, facilitating more efficient and secure home working during (and after) the pandemic.

Street Connect Clydebank is an outreach hub supported by Park Christian Fellowship, enabling local people to reach out to hurting people in their own community. The hub runs street outreach, a drop-in cafe, one to one support, recovery groups and makes referrals to other agencies & to partner rehabs. The grant funding will go towards staff costs. Last year in Clydebank, with 2 - 3 staff working alongside 9 volunteers, the service engaged with 678 people in the street, had a footfall of 401 in our café, gave one to one support to 23 men & 11 women, had 33 men & 11 women attend recovery groups and sent one man to rehab – one participant saying “They’re always there, no matter what problems we face.”

Acceptance: Being homeless, abused, or struggling with addiction/mental health results in fear of rejection & low self-esteem. When they are approached on the street with kindness or receive a warm welcome at our cafes, they begin to feel safe. Our 1-2-1 offers an emotionally secure base from which to work out their problems. In group work they see that they are not alone. Self-esteem: increases as personal support shows a belief in that person. As well as 1-2-1 support, some are offered befrienders. Our ladies are also welcome to activities in the church(es) supporting each hub, offering an accepting, abstinent & supportive wider social network. Self-confidence: Many are overwhelmed by external circumstances. That our WSWs have been there gives confidence. We can refer to debt counselling, the foodbank or for 2nd hand furniture. We can help apply for better housing/repairs and information on childcare. Making the choice to get help relieves stress. Increased confidence and health is seen as problems are resolved. Reduction in or freedom from addiction: This is our speciality. Through 1-2-1s, groups, and referrals to rehab or full detox in the community we enable women to get their lives back. Just comparing before & after photo portraits shows what a difference freedom from addiction makes to their health & well-being. Disengagement from abusive relationships: We refer to counselling, sexual health, rape crisis, safe accommodation etc. As women discover a separate and valued identity, and accept self-worth, with safe refuges and strong support they can move on. Our holistic approach offers a source of strength which fosters determination to see change in their lives. Some women are caregivers in families, a high proportion single parents, so our work indirectly affects life outcomes for the children, including greater emotional stability, improved diet and greater encouragement to engage with education.
