Leap has provided a successful volunteer led befriending service since 2001, a 1:1 service and a group befriending which are currently delivered within 18 communities across South Lanarkshire and which is underpinned by Quality in Befriending Excellence accreditation. With the onset of the COVID - 19 Pandemic the service had to be reviewed because of social distancing and therefore moved to a telephone befriending, however, Leap hopes to resume to offering face to face befriending and socially distant group befriending, but would also like to continue with the telephone befriending service which has attracted a significant number of new clients. The project will allow Leap to recruit a Volunteer Development Officer with the role of recruiting volunteers to deliver telephone befriending of providing support and supervision and for matching of clients with volunteers.

We are seeking in to improve the digital skills of people in South Lanarkshire aged 50 and over. We propose to do this by holding a range of digital activities in South Lanarkshire that are easily accessible for participants, many of whom are lonely, isolated and live in urban and rural areas of significant deprivation. We will recruit a part-time Development Worker (10 hours per week) who will be responsible for establishing further digital activities in different areas of South Lanarkshire, including Avondale and East Kilbride. A key role of the Development Worker will be to recruit and train volunteers from the local communities to become Digital Champions and support participants to get online and learn digital skills. We will run activities in a range of settings, including sheltered housing complexes and community venues. We will also run activities that are not obviously digital but that will encourage people to learn digital skills. These will include a supper club using tablets to look at recipes, and art classes where we use a smartphone to take pictures of the students' work and then upload them to Facebook. The Development Worker will also network with statutory services, other third sector organisations and local community groups to ensure that opportunities are offered to as wide an audience as possible. LEAP will supply a range of digital equipment to assist in the delivery of the activities. We are currently developing social groups in various sheltered housing complexes, and these will introduce digital technology to older people gradually in a relaxed environment, focussing on their interests and using peer support to enhance the learning experience. LEAP has more than 15 years' experience of successfully delivering digital skills to older people, and aims to develop this further by training new and existing volunteers as Digital Champions. In 2018 LEAP ran Digital Champions training, through SCVO, for 10 staff and volunteers and has since set up a Digital Champions group that is keen to develop further over the coming year. We also aim to run a number of one-off sessions covering issues such as online safety, digital banking, shopping online, and how to use energy comparison sites. This would help to dispel some of the fears older people often have around using technology; however, with the added benefit of being able to empower participants to access better deals on things such as home energy and shopping.

This project seeks to develop a range of digital classes for older people in the rural communities of Strathaven and Stonehouse. Following the successful introduction of a befriending and handy person service two years ago, and following a brief pilot in 2016, they have identified a need for the delivery of a range basic digital skills classes to include, smartphones, tablets, basic computing skills, laptop use. Three digital classes in the community will be delivered each week - 4 x 10 week sessions in a year. Staff and volunteers, as part of their initial induction and ongoing training, will be supported in the use of digital technology and given the knowledge on how to access services such as health, social care, pensions which they can pass on to all clients, their families and carers. Volunteers will be developed as digital champions locally; they will continue to assist older people and, with the support of the organisation and collaboration with key stakeholders, further enhance digital education and access for the community.
