We want women to feel more confident and mentally well through making new friends and taking part in activities which they enjoy. They might come to a social group, or to a more formal group, or to events like an Eid party or Christmas Fair, but it gives them the chance to get out of the house and be themselves. I can be myself, not someones mother or wife or daughter in law as one member said. We want women to be able to speak better English and through that, to become more engaged with the wider Dundee community, whether because they come to formal classes for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or to other classes or events where English is the common language. Women who come to DIWC say that they are better able to talk to their GP, childrens teacher and people in shops than they were before (DIWC Learner Evaluation Survey June 2018) We want women to gain a sense of achievement and support them to increase their aspirations, going on to higher levels of education or employment if that is what they want. We want women to feel more in control of their own lives. By gaining confidence, knowledge and language skills they know more about their rights and responsibilities within Scotland; they have a better understanding of health issues for themselves and their families; they may be able to contribute towards their family income. Simply opening their first bank account could be the first step towards this. We want people to be more aware of different cultures, through mixing within the Centre, holding public events and by providing education and training.

Dundee International Women’s Centre (DIWC) runs the city’s only non-religious multicultural BME young women’s youth group. Most members are very socially isolated and lack confidence as a result of not being allowed to participate unaccompanied in social activities or to take part in school sport. DIWC believes this isolation contributes to the fact that young BME women are 3 times more likely to consider suicide and 7 times more likely to self-harm than their white peers. The grant will fund 3 part-time youth workers who use the platform of sports-led youth work that takes account of cultural needs to develop key life skills, build confidence and increase wellbeing.
