....more
Sport is a core element of our Girlguiding programme - it helps to build confidence, physical and mental health, team player skills, communication and resilience - all important skills for girls to develop and use effectively as they grow. One of the six core themes is Be Well - the first badge our girls wanted to complete. Prior to lockdown healthy eating smoothies, challenging themselves to try a new sport and mindfulness all form part of this badge. The girls enjoyed it so much we have done it agin. During Covid we have been meeting virtually and by far the most popular event was our virtual yoga and mindfulness session. Feedback from parents is that they saw their girls keep it up and help with anxiety they were experiencing. The girls clearly missed team sport while this was on hold so we created challenge badges that between sessions got them moving and outside as much as possible -scavenger hunts, roller skating, running all formed part of this. Our key challenge has been our numbers - with the virtual setting teenage girls struggled with this setting. When we were able to meet again in person not having the numbers for team sports (e.g. rounders) presented a challenge. As guides though the girls found a solution - creating their own games that saw them moving in innovative ways (hopping, running, using their scooter) to keep fit and still find that competitive edge they desire. Sport is a great equaliser as well. Even the most sporty of the girls have a level playing field with same of the games we play (two sticks and a tea towel as hockey, cat and mouse). This helps increase the confidence of those who aren't normally 'on the winning team' and see those team work and problem solving skills shine. In a non pandemic year (and if the funds are there) activities such as abseiling and kayaking form part of our programme. Many of our girls would not have experienced these sports before - sometimes creating an interest that moves beyond guides or challenges them to do something new (while having fun). They won't know it but this puts them in a strong place for further academic/employment when they are older. This year, when we were able to do activities again our option (funding by parents) was adventure golf. It was great to see the girls learning as they went round the holes, celebrating the below par holes of others and engaging with each other in a social way. The virtual setting cannot replace this.
