SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS

Overview

School of Hard Knocks uses rugby, boxing and strongman courses to support a curriculum of powerful life lessons which change the futures of school children at risk of exclusion and adults out of work but seeking sustained employment.

The contribution from schools to the costs of their programme is an integral part of their financial sustainability and has ensured schools have ‘skin in the game’ to co-operate on management and information sharing. This financial security is supported by The Department of Work and Pensions who remain important to programme development and the charity has proven successful in their payment-by-results contract agreements in England, Scotland and Wales.

The long-term impact of programme participant job retention has driven growth and this impact hopes to continue as they adapt programmes to fit the needs of beneficiaries throughout the viral outbreak in 2020. New interventions have included short courses for people who lost their jobs during this time and online resources to help children dealing with stress and anxiety. Their social media presents has also engaged with young people in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, which will have major implications for the communities the charity works with.

Comment: The charity's revenue has increased due to a recent change in strategy that has resulted in better performance of corporate donations and fee income from contracts (including a major payment-by-results agreement with the Department of Work and Pensions). Success in these areas was combine with the winning of additional multi-year grants which have given them financial security and the confidence to prioritise diversifying income further.

They hope to prioritise individual giving in the future with a particular focus on the ‘Friends of School of Hard Knocks’ campaign that seeks grassroots regular donors. They had planned to capitalise on the opportunity of the Rugby World Cup in Japan with a major fundraising event in August 2019 that would take advantage of public interest but this has been revised due to the viral pandemic.
