Essentially this programme focuses the confidence and self-belief of the girls. It is an asset-based approach building on their personal abilities and characteristics rather than trying to change them to fit an ideal. Along the way, they will gain skills which will be useful in future employment, and experience an alternative learning approach which may change their aspirations for the future. As the girls undertake the activities described in the previous section, they will experience a professional working environment, learning about Health & Safety in the workplace; how to use the correct tools safely; and understanding the basic principles of motor mechanics and engineering. They will follow the syllabus outlined in the AQA Unit Award workbook, working towards the completion of the accreditation. Every girl will be treated as an individual, accepted as they are when they walk through the door. With a maximum of six girls on each course, the two instructors are able to give individual attention to each student. The instructors, who are experienced mechanics or engineers, act as role models and mentors to the students. The calm environment is a safe place to learn, and to make mistakes! The emphasis is on success, however small the task. We aim to make learning fun again, translating this back to the school environment. The key outcomes will be the development of the interpersonal skills that are so important in day-to-day life at school or in their communities such as respect, self-control, being supportive; and the employability skills that will be important in the future such as teamwork, listening, communication, problem solving etc. The girls will have succeeded at unfamiliar tasks with unfamiliar equipment. All of these will boost their confidence and self-esteem, enabling them to make positive life choices and to say No to negative influences.
