By providing specialist sexual violence counselling, we will enable women and girls to move forwards from the sexual violence or child sexual abuse that they have experienced, improving their health and well-being. Through our counselling: -Women and girls will process what has happened to them and gain a better understanding of the sexual violence they experienced and how they responded to it. - Women and girls will be able to address the emotional trauma they have experienced, understanding triggers and destructive behaviours, such as self-harm or use of drugs or alchohol. They will develop coping skills and strategies. -Women and girls will build confidence and self-esteem. Our therapy will reinforce that they were not to blame for the sexual violence they experienced and that it does not define who they are. - Women and girls will have the opportunity to explore the dynamics of their relationships, they will develop trust in a safe environment and through this improve their ability to form healthy trusting relationships in future. - Women and girls will improve their awareness of the other support that may be available to them, both through CARA and through other services. At the end of our counselling, our expected outcomes will be that women and girls will : - Feel more able to make everyday decisions - Feel more confident - Feel better about themselves - Be taking better care of themselves (for example, eating well, exercising) - Have more positive coping skills/strategies for taking care of themselves emotionally.

This project provides counselling, advocacy and emotional support for women across mid and north Essex who have experienced sexual violence. The grant will fund a women’s practitioner and a specialist advocate to support victims through the criminal justice system, including reporting the crime to the police. Counselling will focus on understanding that sexual violence is a crime of power and control, rather than the victim’s behaviour. There will also be drop-in and telephone services, and home outreach.

This project will expand on the work of the organisation with women who have experienced sexual violence. The expansion element will employ an adult practitioner to provide counselling and support to beneficiaries. They will line manage volunteer workers as well as delivering training. The project will undertake an in-depth assessment with each new client looking at her whole life needs, to create a package of support including one-to-one counselling, advocacy, befriending and court support.
