The health and wellbeing of the women and children in our refuges lie at the heart of what we do. The programmes we will deliver go far beyond the benefits of safe accommodation, vital though this is. Their longer term health and wellbeing depend on helping the women and their children build proper understanding of abuse, and relationship skills which will be crucial to their lives in the future. The refuges provide a unique environment in which as individuals and small families, the women and their children can learn, develop and grow individually and in groups. Our service users (women and children) are from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, faiths, the risks and warning signs of abuse + Greater self-confidence and resilience + Greater confidence in fulfilling their potential + Greater stability in their lives + Greater ability to develop healthy relationships + Improved wellbeing and quality of life + Greater toleration and understanding of others + Greater trust and co-operation between the women and children The children will be better equipped with healthier ways of dealing with conflict The children will have improved self-confidence, self-belief and esteem. And overall the outcome is that the family is able to function with better parenting with their vulnerable children living with greater stability in their lives. It helps the women as mothers to develop effective communication skills for maintaining positive relationships with their children and others. The ability to deliver this support in refuge means that we can also respond much more effectively with the women and children as individuals - and provide sensitive, personalised support for both women and child.
