ST JOSEPH'S HOSPICE HACKNEY

Mission:

Our mission is to provide compassionate, specialist palliative care to people in the diverse community of East London who are living with life-limiting illness.
Analysis by Giving is Great

Positives:

  • This charity has a robust balance sheet
  • There have been no material income shortfalls in recent years
  • Fundraising costs are low relative to funds raised
  • A significant proportion of recent income was derived from major grant makers including the Government
  • The Board appears to be well diversified in terms of age and dynamic in terms of composition

Financial issues to consider:

  • This charity has substantial assets and unrestricted reserves of £38,385,000 available, equivalent to 32 months of spending and so may not be able to utilise additional funding
Comment by the Charity:
Our reserve levels at the end of 2020-21 were at around 11 months of operating expenditure, giving our trustees some assurance that the Hospice should be able to come through the COVID-19 pandemic in a relatively stable financial position. Following the pandemic we are keen to ensure we have adequate general reserves to carry us through such periods of uncertainty and maintain high quality care to patients and families. The Trustees have concluded that, going forward, our general reserves should be no lower than nine months operating costs to ensure continued viability, as our income streams can be subject to significant fluctuation.
