The project will help to address several key areas that are prevalent in a teenage girls life, as well as to help to bridge the gap between students living in poverty and those who are not. It will allow them to enjoy and thrive rather than be held back by the limitations that low income creates and remove the stigma attached to affordability making the teenage years just a little bit easier to get through. Project Jane aims to improve both the physical and mental health and wellbeing of teenage girls in Bedford. When poverty forces individuals and families to choose between food, shelter and hygiene products, unfortunately hygiene products and washing facilities are often not the main priority. This can lead to poor hygiene and truancy from school through embarrassment from not having appropriate sanitary products. As well as the physical impacts of poor hygiene, there can also be a large affect on a teenage girl's mental wellbeing. Feeling self-conscious or embarrassed, as well as bullying and exclusion by peers, can lead to low self confidence and serious mental health conditions. By providing resources in a way that they can be collected anonymously, we contribute to the elimination of the negative affects that poverty has on health and wellbeing. Our additional services will contribute to improving health and wellbeing in other ways. Providing prom dresses and a safe place for girls to get together will allow teenage girls to join in with their peers in activities, as well as form social groups separate from their home and school lives. Support groups and workshops will be easily accessible and informative about how to proactively look after your own health and wellbeing.
