Our transition outcomes for vulnerable women are: More confident and capable parents, improved self-esteem and physical wellbeing and increased integration. We address these aims through four strands which allow us to monitor and evaluate impact, focusing specifically on helping women to develop as parents and in becoming more integrated members of society. Our progression outcomes for women are: Improved safety, improved physical health, increased support networks, improved money management skills, improved employability, improved management of tenancy/accommodation, improved basic skills, and improved living skills. Our focus on parenting skills is essential because a number of children are considered at risk by Social Services. Success in this area is measured in some cases by children being removed from any safeguarding plan. Women have told us how the teaching at WAF has helped them better understand what children need and learn the skills to be a good parent, as many did not have good experiences of childhood. For example, Hagar said, Your children need you to be calm, WAF teaches you techniques to calm down when you are stressed, and Ronah: I learn to behave, how to treat the children. Because I didnt get it back home. You can only give what you know. Women acquire life skills that help them handle conflict, rebuild self-confidence damaged by abuse, and manage life independently. This along with practical help and advocacy equips them to cope better with their difficult situations, have more capacity to care for their children, be more resilient, and hope and plan for the future. The WAF enterprises, started by an earlier group of mums, provide training, volunteering and skills such as teamwork, timekeeping and customer service that increase employability. 32 women successfully moved on in 2017.
