The funding will support project costs of £2511274 over 5 years to support their core domestic abuse services. Luton All Women Centre is a centre for women run by women providing a safe and accessible women-only environment. This is delivered via a blend of remote and face-to-face environments and comprises 1-1 casework group support community support and advice training and consultancy services for professionals around DVA and educational workshops for young people in schools/colleges plus direct support for girls who are already affected by abuse. Alongside their core DVA service LAWC provide access to counselling health/wellbeing services (e.g. mental health support) a harmful practices service and several peer-group sessions designed to meet therapeutic rehabilitative educational and social objectives.

The funding will cover the organisation’s core service for women from Luton and the surrounding areas including 1-1 casework specialist support groups and a wellbeing group. The funding will cover the salaries of two Domestic Abuse Support Workers.

Women with experiences of childhood sexual abuse often struggle to recover from the impact of such trauma, leaving them facing a range of complex issues such as poor mental health/ wellbeing, ongoing ....more

Women with experiences of childhood sexual abuse often struggle to recover from the impact of such trauma, leaving them facing a range of complex issues such as poor mental health/ wellbeing, ongoing fears, low self-esteem, repeat victimisation and social isolation. By addressing this problem directly through this project, the expected outcomes for women are: Improved access to support There is currently no other professionally structured group that helps women to process experiences of childhood sexual abuse in our region. Beneficiaries will also be encouraged to access other services at LAWC such as advice/ advocacy services or social/ relaxation activities (e.g. mindfulness sessions). Improved health and wellbeing - Equipped with better coping mechanisms and methods of self-protection, beneficiaries will have the strength to recover from the trauma they have experienced, be less likely to suffer from issues such as anxiety, isolation, shame or guilt, have improved confidence, and be better able to manage their long-term physical and mental health. Enhanced understanding of their experience - Participants will be aided to gain greater insight into the trauma of their abuse, to integrate this into their wider life experience and become less likely to suffer repeat victimisation. Greater practical resilience/ reduced levels of disadvantage By embedding the Mimosa group into the wider package of holistic care/ support provided by LAWC, beneficiaries will be supported to make other practical improvements in their lives e.g. enrolling on further courses/ workshops, entering employment or volunteering. Better emotional resilience The group will enable women to experience a new social network, where being inspired by (or supporting) others in similar situations will lead to them feeling more confident and able to build/ maintain trusting relationships.
