Peak Cymru collaborates with young people, artists and intergenerational communities to celebrate the unique qualities and ecologies of Southeast Wales. This grant funds core costs to enable rurally based young people aged 16 to 30 years to shape Peak Cymru’s programme, to embed their voice within the organisation and strengthen a co-leadership model.

Peak - Art in the Black Mountains Ltd in Powys will use the grant to enable local young people to plan a series of events and activities for the wider community to help address issues that rural communities face. £9945 will fund artist fees marketing monitoring a project manager event transport translation and a photographer. Developed skills: Young women will develop competencies in digital skills including photography, editing, animation, blogging etc. which will upskill them for future job opportunities. They will also develop their communication skills through team-working and co-producing the project, where theyre empowered to see themselves as co-creators and will become more confident at expressing their ideas in a group. Theyll develop skills in critical thinking and reflective practice throughout the course of the project. Other gained competencies take form in research, editing, writing, design and making. Increased confidence: Working with the project co-ordinator to shape the project will give young women agency, increasing their confidence. Young women will have the chance to meet and bond with like-minded peers (which can be difficult in a rural location) and have a safe space to express themselves. Participants will have experienced something new and innovative that they would not have had the chance to do otherwise, increasing confidence, resilience and aspirations. One-to-one mentoring that is tailored to each participant will allow participants to identify and maximise opportunities as they arise. Other outcomes include: -Improved health and well-being through participation in a regular group: evaluation of similar projects demonstrates that participants develop a sense of routine and that the creative activities offer alternative coping strategies. -Agency over their homeplace: Participants will learn about the history of Abergavenny as well as its current culture, people and events. They will be encouraged to take ownership of their town, which will open up new networks of people and opportunities to participate in events such as Abergavenny Food Festival. - New friendships: our rural communities are isolated, with high levels of outmigration for young women in this age group-the project offers a chance to build a social network. -Physical artwork including films, photographs, prints, website/blog, social media channels.
